Project ALS Family
Mother, Wife, Friend, Advocate
Submitted by Laura’s husband John: When Laura was diagnosed with ALS in 2006, she took action. Laura understood that she could make a difference with this diagnosis and set forth to raise funds and awareness of this devastating disease. Laura formed a team of moms to raise over $100,000 toward ALS research. Realizing the giving power and spirit in her community, she embraced the idea of starting a local foundation to provide financial assistance to deserving mothers facing unforeseen medical challenges. This idea became A Giving Spirit Foundation (www.agivingspirit.org), a 501(c)(3) charity. By this time, Laura had discovered Project ALS and befriended board member Larry Tarica. She so believes in this organization and its groundbreaking work that part of AGSF’s stated mission is to support Project ALS. Laura had the extreme fortune to attend 2008 and 2009 “Tomorrow is Tonight” Project ALS fundraisers with her family and even met Meredith and Valerie Estess for a tour of the amazing Jenifer Estess Laboratory at Columbia University. Most recently Laura launched an email campaign to all of her friends and family, challenging them to take part in the Project ALS “2012 Spring Lab Challenge”. Laura inspires everyone she meets – her kind, determined and generous spirit makes a difference in the lives of many and changes the perception of how someone lives with ALS.
